Ok, I’ve wanted to do one of these for a while now. I want to get back into blogging so what better way than to do a challenge. Here we go!
Last October my family had the pleasure of travelling from Vancouver, Canada to the gorgeous Island of Bali, Indonesia for our very good friends’ wedding. They tied the knot at the most incredible Villa in the town of Cemagi, where spent a glorious three days at the luxurious Taman Ahimsa Villa.
To give you an accurate review of the trip and destination I’ll start from the beginning…
Our flight took us from Vancouver to Taipei then on to Bali for a total fly time of just over 18 hours and 24 hours of travel time. This was by far our longest flight and furthest destination yet, but because of our pervious travel to Europe I was pretty relaxed. I think this helped in knowing what to expect, but I think I may have been a little unprepared. China Airlines was surprisingly very accommodating for families travelling with babies/small children. They automatically gave us bulkhead seating and because it was a night flight they set up the bassinet for us. Naomi was a little big for it, but she did sleep in it for a couple hours (however her legs were too long so it wasn’t conducive for long sleep time). Flying overnight was great, since she did sleep most of the way to Taipei (13 hours). We weren’t so lucky on the second leg, where we had regular economy seats. Luckily it was only a 5 hour flight. The food was pretty decent for airline food, however, in hindsight, I wish I would have packed more snacks and entertainment. Continue reading
The last few days have been riddled with ups and downs surrounding my blog. If you have visited recently you will have noticed the change. I was moving over hosting companies and basically the last year of posts, recipes and photos were wiped. I tried to get it back but it looks like it’s gone to web heaven. While I was pretty upset about this at first it’s pretty much keeping up with the theme of 2014 – RESET. So far this year our family has moved cities, welcomed a new member (Sam) and my hubby has started a new career. While any one of these three is enough to create unrest, for us it has brought us much closer to one another, our extended families and old friends. Also fitting, this happened around the same time as Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year so I’ll take it as a sign and move on with excitement for the year ahead.
Life is not always about trying to fix something that is broken. Sometimes, it’s about starting over and creating something better.

If someone would have told me that I would have travelled more right after having a baby than any other point in my life I would have laughed in their face. I mean, aren’t babies a whole lot of work? Don’t they need stability and familiarity? What about doctors and family around to help? Yup…these are all the thoughts that ran through my head the first time my husband brought up the idea to take our first trip. That was last November and my little munchkin was just over 2 months old. Destination? Maui.
Ok, so definitely NOT the toughest decision to make. I mean, hot sunny weather at a time where it is dreary almost every day in Vancouver, Canada. However it was the unknown of travelling with a baby that little that freaked me right out. However in that moment I realized that one of my greatest limitations was not doing something because of the fear of what might happen. In that same moment, I also made the decision to change. So we booked our flights. Don’t get me wrong, I still get that feeling almost each time I do something new, the only difference is now I stop, recognize the feeling, and make the choice to do otherwise. It’s not easy, but it’s one of those “once you know, you can’t unknow” situations.
Needless to say, Hawaii was INCREDIBLE . It of course was not the same kind of trip we would have taken pre-baby, but it was an amazing, soul-inspiring, adventure. And the best part of all, we travelled with two of our friends who made it that much more beautiful. We stayed at the lovely Aina Nalu, a gorgeous condo-complex in Lahaina which was perfect as a home base. We even rented a swing which little Naomi appreciated (she definitely loved her swing as a little one). One of the qualities I learned really quickly as a parent was flexibility. I think travelling definitely helped in that regard. I definitely learned that things will not always go as planned, but with no attachment to a specific outcome, there is space to create an unforgettable experience. So of course, the success of this trip only catapulted the many more that followed.
By the time my maternity leave was over (it’s 1 year in Canada) we had been on 15 flights, 2 continents, 6 countries, 16 cities and countless hotel rooms. Each time we picked up for the next place I had to remind my inner voice that all was good, it was ok to leap. Now, I realize that leaping is the first step to great adventure and so here I leap again. Except this time it’s not across an physical ocean, but a personal one. I will be starting the RHN program at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition soon and have also started training for a 1/2 marathon next year. These are both two huge challenges I probably would not have taken on prior to having my daughter. Now, feeling empowered I say…bring it on…
